New Mac owners get free Lion upgrade from Apple

Apple is freely giving away Mac OS X 10.7, also known as the latest Mac operating system Lion, to customers who bought a new Mac system between June 6 and when the OS is released next month.

According to Apple, the operating system can be downloaded at no cost through the Mac OS Lion Up-to-Date program, allowing users to keep up with the latest offering from the company.

In maintaining their stance of abandoning the use of optical discs, copies of the Lion upgrade will only be obtained from the Mac App Store, the digital distribution platform of Apple that launched last January.

The Cupertino-based electronics company revealed last week that Lion is slated for next month’s release with a price tag of $29.99.

Once the operating system goes on sale, those entitled with the free upgrade will have 30 days before their free privilege expires. The 30-day limit also applies from the date of purchase of the new Mac laptop or desktop.

No exact date in July was specified by Apple for Lion’s launch.

Just as competitor Microsoft offers similar deals when a new OS is about to become available, Apple has the tradition of providing easier means to get the latest Mac.
